Nunavut and the Arctic

Inuit place, language and knowledge

Nunavut is Inuit Nunangat, not an empty Arctic backdrop. Inuit languages, knowledge, art and governance shape life across vast communities connected by sea, ice and air rather than roads.

Statistics Canada’s report on the 2021 Census says 64.6% of Nunavut residents spoke Inuktut at home at least regularly; 41.4% spoke it predominantly. The figures describe 2021, and the report cautions against simple comparisons with earlier censuses.
