Montréal

Language, neighbourhoods and creative life

Montréal’s public life moves between French and many other languages. Its markets, independent bookshops, festivals, Haitian and North African communities and strong music culture make the city feel both local and outward-looking.

Statistics Canada’s 2021 Census infographic shows that, among Montréal residents who spoke a non-official language predominantly at home, Spanish and Arabic were the most common reported languages, at 16% each.
