Halifax and the Atlantic

Harbour life and Black Atlantic histories

Halifax is a port city with Mi’kmaq, African Nova Scotian, Acadian and immigrant histories. The waterfront, local music and seafood are part of the picture, but so are the communities that have challenged exclusion and reshaped the city.

In 1895, Black Baptist community leaders and intellectuals in Halifax and Dartmouth created the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes. Parks Canada recognizes it as the first and only all-Black men’s ice hockey league in Canada.
