A POSSIBLE MOVE · NÍVEL B2

First things first, chicken

Erika asks what a move to Dublin might involve. Keiran checks the official rules with her—and reminds her that a visit and permission to work are different things.

Erika had the GGB and GGD tabs open on her laptop. Keiran called after work. She missed him, and the thought of living in Dublin had started to feel less like a daydream and more like a question she needed to ask.

“I’ve been looking at what a move would involve, chicken. If GGB had a role for me in Dublin, could I just transfer?” “Ah, I’d love to have you here, but first things first: visiting Ireland and being allowed to work here are two different things.”

A visit is not work permission

Keiran had checked the Irish immigration guidance. Brazilian passport holders do not normally need an entry visa for a short visit, but the immigration officer decides the permission granted at the border, which can be for up to 90 days. That visitor permission does not let Erika take a job. She could not arrive as a visitor and simply start working or switch to a work permission because a transfer came up.

“So no booking a one-way ticket and hoping for the best?” Erika asked. “Not for work, no. You’d need the right permission before you started. And because you’re Brazilian, being visa-exempt for a visit doesn’t exempt you from the work-permit rules.”

Could an internal transfer fit?

Keiran explained that one possible route to ask GGB about was an Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit. It is limited to eligible senior managers, key personnel with essential specialist knowledge, or trainees in a structured programme. A standard transfer for any employee is not automatic. The Brazilian and Irish entities must meet the official connected-company requirements; senior managers and key personnel generally need at least six months with the overseas employer; and the role must meet the current pay threshold. The 2026 threshold is about €49,500 a year for senior management or key personnel, with a different threshold for trainees.

“That sounds like a lot of boxes to tick,” Erika said. “It is, so GGB’s HR team would need to check the role and the company structure. There may be another permit route, such as a General or Critical Skills Employment Permit, depending on the actual job, salary and eligibility. We shouldn’t guess which one applies.”

The costs and the order of things

The current application fee for an Intra-Company Transfer Employment Permit is €500 for a permit of six months or less, or €1,000 for a permit from six months up to 24 months. A successful permit is not the same as residence registration: someone coming from outside the EU, EEA, UK or Switzerland to stay more than 90 days must register their permission. The standard registration fee is €300, although exemptions can apply. Fees and thresholds can change, so Erika saved the official pages rather than relying on a screenshot.

“First, I’ll talk to HR and ask whether there could be a Dublin role and which permit route they would assess. Secondly, I’ll check the job duties, salary and company link against the official criteria. Then, if there’s a realistic route, I’ll work through the application before making plans to move.” “That’s the way, chicken. No panic, no wild promises. Just one step at a time.”

Erika closed the tabs, but not the idea. She still missed Keiran. Now she also knew what to ask GGB—and that the first answer would have to come from the people who could assess the role properly.
