Christchurch and Canterbury

A rebuilt city beside the Southern Alps

Christchurch has changed through earthquake recovery, new public spaces, gardens and creative projects. Canterbury’s plains connect the city to farming, rivers and the mountains.

Christchurch takes its Māori name, Ōtautahi, from the pā of Tautahi, once situated on the banks of the Avon River, whose Māori name is Ōtakaro.
